The original version of Louisiana Strut was cut in Atlanta in the fall of 1978 with veteran bassist and former member of the Electric Flag, Miles Davis’s Bitches Brew and Bob Dylan’s Highway 61 Revisited – Harvey Brooks – Wayne Cochran’s drummer Kevin White, Tony Waters, congas (Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Joe Henderson, Art Blakey) and Atlanta session man – Bill McPherson (Buddy Miles Express) on alto sax. The last few bars of this remake feature saxophonist Bill McPherson and Pat LaBarbera of Buddy Rich band playing us out on tenor sax.

There were numerous 2-track tapes carted between Atlanta, Los Angeles, Toronto and beyond the past forty years until master producer Dubmatix suggested baking and retrieving the stems from each instrument. Rather than rely on ‘plug-ins’ or samples borrowed from other known entities, the King’s borrow from a vast trove of jazz, funk, and pop sounds derived from Bill King’s early recording sessions; dating back to the early seventies. The horns are real, the drums, the clavinet; with a touch of newness - King’s gospel-style piano work and a bit of organ overlayed on the Strut.

Both King’s (Bill & Jesse) are award-winning producers, players and composers and hosts of the weekly new music radio show – Soul Nation at Jazz.Fm91.1 in Toronto and heard Tuesday evenings 9-midnight.

The collection of stems, sounds, new tracks are masterfully cut to fit and reconciled by the artful sound-architect, Jesse “Dubmatix” King. The result is a seamless thread that links the prime years of soul and funk with the now. When you listen, you hear the real deal – the players, the reimagined and unearthing of sessions that rarely saw the light of day.

For the J&B Kings- Jesse and Bill – is the first of many future collaborations.
