Former Sony Music Exec Timothy Xu Named CEO of China's Taihe Music Group

Taihe Music Group (TMG), a leading music group in China, announced on Monday the appointment of Timothy Xu as its new president and CEO. Xu will oversee the music group's business operations and development, and help execute its long-term strategic plans.
Xu possesses a wealth of experiences in the music industry, from recorded music, publishing and artist management to the touring business and cross-regional integration. From 2012 to 2016 Xu served as chairman/CEO, Greater China, for Sony Music Entertainment. He is also credited with having re-established EMI Music's presence in China, serving as chief representative, EMI Music China and GM, EMI Music Publishing China from 1994 to 2002. Xu has the distinction of being the first PRC national to run a major music label in China.
Qian Shimu, chairman of the Taihe Music Group, welcomed Xu aboard. "Leveraging his rich management experience in tier-one international music companies and deep industry know-how, Mr. Xu will play a pivotal role in Taihe Music Group and help take TMG to next level," Shimu said in a statement.
"With the recovery of China's music market, greater-China-based music companies are now witnessing exciting industry changes, as well as seeing great opportunities," Xu commented in a statement. "TMG has been actively investing in original content, continuously enhancing its one-stop service chain, and has achieved many remarkable milestones in just a few years. I'm honored to tackle this new role."
TMG is a leading music service provider in China, offering music services through its Baidu music player, Showstart app and LavaRadio, among many others. It owns and operates nine music labels and has, via either full ownership or distribution deals, one of the largest Chinese music catalogs. It distributes across all platforms in the country, from online and mobile to film and TV. TMG is also a leader in the business of live music performance, claiming approximately 50 percent of the live market share in China.
